Rey Bustos
Rey Bustos
Artistic Anatomy Professor
Altadena, United States

I have taught figure drawing and artistic anatomy since 1990. I have a book out, "Rey's Anatomy:Figurative Art Lessons from the Classroom".

As an educator I have worked hard to make my passion for anatomy more accessible to more students and professionals seeking a more interactive mode of studying or using anatomical reference. In this web site, I along with my designer Yariv Newman, have tried to give a taste of what I am striving to achieve but in a larger scale sometime in the near future. Please use my email to reach me if you are interested in any of the work that you see here or for any help that I can avail myself to you."

TEACHING EXPERIENCE:

CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, LOS ANGELES
Adjunct Instructor
2005-2012

Artistic Anatomy
Courses taught include two figure-drawing classes, with a broad overview of anatomical information and instruction about how to approach the human form. Methods of understanding light, shadow and composition are also a component of the instruction. Deep knowledge of anatomy for the artist is taught through ECORCHE’, which is an anatomical sculpture. Class format includes lecture, group and individual instruction for students on their projects.

ART CENTER COLLEGE OF DESIGN
Associate Professor
1998 – 2020

Anatomy, Ecorche & Imaginatomy
Courses taught include Anatomy, Analysis of Form and Principles of Drawing. Instruction includes lectures in figurative drawing and extensive compositional training. Class structure includes lectures, group process and one on one instruction. I developed and introduced a course called Imaginatomy. In this class, illustrators, entertainment designers and other students are given intense exposure to human anatomy and then must use this knowledge of human anatomy to make up an imaginary creature. They are required to justify the anatomical logic. The finished project is an anatomical model of their “Creature”, half skeleton and half layered with muscles. The students must do the research to provide the scientific taxonomy of their animal.

DISNEY FEATURE ANIMATION
Contract Instructor
2005 – present

Hands on instruction for animators and animation artists in anatomy. Classes include lectures in an anatomical ecorche’. Two-month intensive exposure into human anatomy.
DISNEY and ABC EMPLOYEES
As of 2010 I also created a class for the non art employees at Disney studios and ABC (Owned by Disney Corp.)

DISNEY/PIXAR
2012 was asked and I did help create the character for a Pixar movie due to be released in 2014, “Jack and the Beanstalk”, working title. I designed the anatomy of the giant using my expertise in anatomy and the mechanics of the body. I have also led talks at Disney about how the creature would walk, eat, etc.

LOS ANGELES ACADEMY OF FIGURATIVE ART
2004 – Present
I teach five classes at LAAFA:
Anatomy/ecorche, following the format of the masters in previous centuries. The class is lecture based. Students make an anatomical model in this 10-week, 40-hour course. Lectures provide the foundation of anatomical knowledge for figurative artists at a very high level.

Figure Drawing. In this class I focus on classical figure drawing and academic anatomical understanding.

Imaginatomy, as with Art Center but with Figure Drawing as a prerequisite.

2D Anatomy. In this class each student learns anatomy through very detailed pen and ink drawings of each area of the human form. Most of this course is taught without a model. The students learn anatomy through studying the anatomy of reference from the old masters.

Head Drawing. In this class students learn about the skull and the muscles before they begin to learn about the facial features and eventually form and structure.
